Travel Bag Essentials: Road-Trip Edition

Travel Essentials

Anyone who road-trips knows the importance of having a few essential within easy reach. After all, nobody wants to be the person on the side of the road digging through their suitcase for that one item they really need.

My boyfriend and I road-trip a lot, and I always make sure to have these items on hand before every trip.

  1. Laptop

Whenever I’m going on a long trip, you will always find my laptop in my bag. This ensures its safety and keeps it close by in case I need it.

  2. Sunglasses

Obviously, a no-brainer road-trip essential is a pair of good sunglasses. This is not the thing you want to forget on a long, sunny drive!

  3. Travel Wallet

A wallet with your essential cards and a bit of cash is a basic necessity for road-trips. Whether it’s filling up gas, or feeding your caffeine addiction, it’s important to have some money on hand. My Prada WOC is my favorite for travelling because it works as a wallet in my bigger bags and a bag on its own while I’m on the trip. You can see it styled here & here.

  4. Touch-Up MakeUp Bag

I don’t tend to wear much makeup while travelling, but it’s nice to have a few essentials to touch-up my makeup throughout the day. I use the pouch that came with my Saint Laurent tote for my makeup basics, which normally includes a compact, some lipgloss, and a good concealer.

  5. Lotions

Travelling can be hard on your skin, so it’s important to have good skin products on hand, like my favorite L’Occitane lotion. [And Altoids to keep your breath fresh too!]

  6. Necessity Pouch

A necessity pouch, filled with things like Advil, hand sanitizer, and tweezers, is a necessity for any bag I carry, so a travel bag is no exception. If you want to go the non-designer route, you can also buy a minimergency kit, which includes a lot of the things you might need in a tight spot.

  7. An Audiobook

Obviously, a phone is always an essential, but on road-trips, I especially like to use my phone for audiobooks. I’m a subscriber to Audible (Amazon’s monthly audiobook subscription), which is basically a necessity if you are a reading addict like me.

Sometimes there isn’t time in the day to pick up a physical book, and when that’s the case, an audiobook is a great alternative. Plus, if you sign up for Audible, you can get your first audiobook free. Since you can cancel at any time (including after your first book) who wouldn’t want to give it a try?

  8. Tech Charger

On road-trips it’s always important to bring chargers (and car adapters) to keep all your tech juiced up and ready to go. Especially with the new audiobook you plan to listen to!

  9. A Good Book

Even with an audiobook, it’s always nice to have a good book to keep busy throughout a road-trip… Or when you arrive at your destination. I’m currently reading Me Before You, so no spoilers, please!

  10. Travel Tote

Finally, a good carry-all tote is really the main necessity when it comes to preparing for a road-trip. I love my Saint Laurent tote (see it worn here & here), but Tory Burch also makes a great one, and if you’re looking for a non-designer option, I also like this tote from Nordstrom.

I’ve centered this casual look around my J. Crew Downtown Field Jacket because it is such a staple in my fall wardrobe. It’s been built to be versatile and to withstand a beating. This is not something I worry about throwing into the backseat of my car, or shoving into an over-filled suitcase. It’s made to last.

Something I especially love about the jacket is all the pockets. There is literally enough pockets for anything you might want to carry – so much so that I rarely carry a handbag if I’m using this jacket. I just throw my card case into one pocket, my phone into another, a couple lip products in another, and I’m good to go.

I’ve also paired the jacket with one of my favorite linen tees from Gap (see me wearing it in gray here), as well as my Lululemon Wunder Unders (my go-to ‘leggings’), and this gray FlexFit cap that helps elevate such a casual look — while also hiding some un-kept hair!

Finally, I’m wearing my gold Ray-Ban aviators that I purchased recently. I’ve had an all-black pair for a while (see them styled here). I loved the style and shape so much I decided to go for them in another color. I’m a total gold hardware girl, so these were obviously perfect for me.

Sam Edelman Booties & American Eagle Denim

So, after how much I loved the location of my previous shoot (see it here), I decided to use this backyard landscape again for this more fall-inspired look.

I know it’s still a bit early to be dressing for fall (even though it’s already September). And trust me, I’m not ready to say goodbye to the sunshine yet, either.

But, unfortunately, the cold weather is coming, so we might as well prepare for it.

I love that this look is full of transitional pieces, like the American Eagle blouse that is short-sleeve, so it’s still appropriate for warm weather, yet, it’s made of a knit material that will also work as the weather cools down. The Sam Edelman Petty booties are also great because they’ll keep you warm, even as it starts to cool down at night, but they’re not a full-length boot that’ll be too hot in the early-fall weather.

I’ve also paired the look with black jeans that are also from American Eagle and my Saint Laurent shopping tote, which is a favorite of mine. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about the Saint Laurent tote, and I’ll probably do a full review of it in the future. But, for now, all I can say is it’s a great, versatile black tote that could be a great staple in anyone’s wardrobe.

The Labor Day Edit

The Labour Day Edit

I know that Labor Day posts & sales are flooding your inboxes and filling the internet, but I’ve decided to add this edit because:

1) I, too, really shop the sales on Labor Day.

2) Labor Day is the perfect opportunity to get staple summer finds at great discounts, items that you know will work perfectly next year.

3) Since fall stuff goes on sale too, there is no better way to welcome the new season than with some new, weather appropriate items.

J. Crew, for example, has 25% off your order of $125 or more and 30% off your order of $200 or more. A sale like this is the perfect time to stock up on some of their great staples, like this cardigan.

Furthermore, sites like Boohoo that often have good sales running, create even greater sales to keep people interested. Right now, Boohoo is 50% off, so if you’ve been thinking of trying them out, now’s the time. I’ll definitely be placing an order, and I’m eyeing this coat that will come to less than $30 after the discount!

Sites like Nordstrom and Rebecca Minkoff also have sales on select items, and although these are often end of summer pieces (like this blush Rebecca Minkoff bag), there are also great fall items on sale, like these beautiful Sam Edelman boots. I already own them, or I’d be taking advantage of them at 50% off!

Happy Shopping!

Contrary to what these photos may lead you to believe, I do not strut around forests in high heels! This is actually right behind my boyfriend’s house. He has a lot of fields and forests on his family’s property, and we’ve always loved taking strolls through them throughout our (almost) six years together. On this day, however, we used the backyard as a gorgeous backdrop for this date-night outfit.

The look is styled to be casual enough that there isn’t much to think about, but elevated enough that you won’t worry about being under-dressed. The shirtdress is rather casual, and I’ve worn it running errands or to lunch with friends, but the heels and the clutch dress it up quite well for this evening look.

If you want to go more casual, swap the heels for flats and add an oversized tote, and then this outfit will last you throughout the whole day.
